Alu-Cab Silenus Forms the Heart of Storyteller’s New Grand Bohemian

Alu-Cab Silenus Forms the Heart of Storyteller’s New Grand Bohemian
6 Min read

When INEOS set out to build the Grenadier, the brief was simple. Create a no-nonsense, back-to-basics 4×4 that could carry on the legacy of the original Defender. Conceived over pints at a London pub, it arrived as a purpose-built platform with a ladder frame, solid axles and torquey BMW powertrain. The Grenadier is a modern vehicle built to an old-school recipe. Storyteller’s New Grand Bohemian incorporating the Alu-Cab Silenus makes it even better.

A great overland rig is never finished at the factory. For decades we have helped turn various vehicles into complete expedition machines. Now, Storyteller Overland has taken that concept to its logical conclusion with the launch of the Grand Bohemian. Their turnkey Global Expedition Vehicle built on the Grenadier and featuring our Silenus Roof Conversion.

A Partnership Forged in the Pursuit of “Soul Safari”

Storyteller’s founders have spent decades crafting purpose-built expedition vehicles on world-class platforms. When they evaluated the Grenadier, they recognized something familiar. “Even before we ever fully built out our first MODE Adventure Van back in the day, we were dreaming about creating a world’s first turnkey micro camper like the Grand Bohemian,” says Jeffrey Hunter, Storyteller’s Founder and CEO. “But it wasn’t until Jim Ratcliffe and the good people at INEOS dared to bring the Grenadier to market that we finally had the right platform to go live on.”

The Grenadier offered everything the Storyteller team were looking for. Iconic styling, body-on-frame architecture, full-time 4×4 and a global service footprint. Something that could bridge the gap between daily driver, weekend warrior and long-range traveler. And to transform it from a capable SUV into a true expedition vehicle?

They came to us.

Standing Room Where It Counts

The Grand Bohemian is built on the Grenadier Trialmaster, featuring the BMW 3.0L engine and 8-speed ZF transmission we’ve come to appreciate. It rolls on EVICTUS Prerunner suspension, Torque Enduro wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich rubber and comes trail-ready with a front winch, auxiliary lighting and twin ARB compressors.

But the magic happens up top.

Our fully integrated Alu-Cab Silenus Roof Conversion transforms the Grenadier from an off-road beast into a genuine overland home. The Silenus creates a low-profile sleeping solution that, when deployed, offers something rare in a vehicle this size. Standing room inside the cabin.

For those who’ve spent years crawling in and out of wedge tents or climbing down ladders at 3 a.m. in a rainstorm, this changes everything. The pass-through design means you move seamlessly from driver’s seat to living space without stepping outside. When the bed is stowed, you can stand up to change clothes, cook, or simply stretch your legs while staying protected from the elements.

“The eternal access and standing room is an absolute game changer,” noted Racin Jason, who installed the first Silenus on a Grenadier in Australia. “I’m not the shortest guy, so being able to stand up and get changed internally in the cabin makes the camping experience so much better.”

Engineered for Integration

What sets the Grand Bohemian apart from a typical owner’s build is the level of integration. Storyteller didn’t simply bolt on components and call it a day. The Grand Bohemian was designed and engineered as a fully integrated adventure system. Every component is curated to work together under a single warranty and nationwide dealer support.

The Silenus fits seamlessly into this philosophy. Constructed from lightweight yet durable aluminum, it maintains the Grenadier’s rugged aesthetic while enhancing functionality. The tapered front profile reduces drag. At 323 pounds, the weight is comparable to a roof rack and rooftop tent combination. But with far greater utility.

The roof conversion integrates with the vehicle’s existing electrical systems, preserving those factory roof power points. Inside, you’ll find integrated LED lighting, USB and USB-C ports with kill switches to prevent battery drain. There’s also Anderson plugs ready for solar input. This is a system designed for real-world use, not just showroom appeal.

A Complete Living System

Storyteller has spec’d the Grand Bohemian for serious four-season exploration. The 5.4kWh power system pairs with up to 400 watts of solar and 30-amp shore power. There’s 10.5 gallons of filtered freshwater. A gasoline-fired heating system provides cabin heat and hot water. Critical for those shoulder-season adventures when temperatures drop.

Then, the 270-Degree Shadow Awning creates expanded outdoor living space, transforming your rig into a sheltered compound whether you’re in the desert, mountains, coast or forest.

Built on Decades of Proven Design

Our relationship with the Grenadier platform didn’t happen by accident. When OK4WD’s Rin Oostdyk saw early renders of the vehicle, he immediately began forwarding every update to Alu-Cab founder Jeremy Bergh, asking us to develop an Icarus-style concept similar to what they’d done for the Defender 110.

Working with a connection at INEOS South Africa, the Alu-Cab team secured a pre-production Grenadier for development. The result was the appropriately named Silenus, keeping with Alu-Cab’s mythology theme while nodding to the Grenadier’s pub-inspired origins.

Since then, the Silenus has been proven across North American terrain, from Overland Expo West to countless remote campsites, with refinements fed back into production units. Installers like Tiny Rig Company in Southern California have refined the process, with owner Daniel Elo noting, “I’ve built dozens of overland vehicles over the years, but the Grenadier with the Silenus might have just taken the top spot. Having stand-up living space in a modern chassis is a game-changer.”

The Soul Safari, Realized

Storyteller describes the Grand Bohemian as a vehicle for “inspired Soul Safari.” A machine that balances refined living with remote exploration. Its emblem, the majestic Kudu, represents that balance: bold yet elegant, unhurried yet decisive when action is required.

It’s fitting, then, that the Silenus shares that philosophy. The roof conversion doesn’t scream for attention. It integrates quietly, maintaining the Grenadier’s clean lines while unlocking its potential as a home on wheels. When closed, it slips through the wind with minimal resistance. When open, it creates space to breathe, cook, sleep and live.

RVIA-Certified and Warranty-Backed

For those considering the leap into a vehicle like the Grand Bohemian, the practical considerations matter. Unlike accessorized vehicles assembled piecemeal, the Grand Bohemian is RVIA-certified, offering long-term financing options, nationwide dealer support, and a unified Storyteller warranty.

That means every component, including the Silenus, is covered under one roof, with service available through a single nationwide network. It’s the kind of support that matters when you’re thousands of miles from home, relying on your vehicle to deliver both transportation and shelter.

The Road Ahead

The Grand Bohemian represents a new direction for the overland industry. A turnkey expedition vehicle built on one of the most anticipated 4×4 platforms in decades. With living quarters designed and integrated by the team that’s been manufacturing the Ultimate Overland Gear for 25 years.

For us, it’s validation of what we’ve always believed. That the best overland vehicles aren’t built by simply adding gear to a capable platform. They’re engineered as complete systems, where every component works in harmony. The Grenadier provided the canvas. Storyteller provided the vision. And the Silenus provides the soul.
