For Patrick, Orla and their adventure pup Lewie, overlanding isn’t just a hobby – it’s how they live. What began as weekend escapes has evolved into a full-time, rolling lifestyle, with the trio exploring remote landscapes, meeting new people and learning to embrace the unexpected.
Their journey started in a Land Rover Defender (the original Rover), but they’ve recently switched to a Toyota Hilux fitted with a ModCAP Camper for more indoor space – especially on stormy days. Still, the name Lewie and the Rover sticks, because at heart, they’re wanderers.
Between border crossings, wild camps and spontaneous braais with strangers, they’ve learned that saying “yes” often leads to their best memories. They share parts of their journey online, but never at the cost of living in the moment.
Next stop? The Paris-Dakar route through West Africa. Through their travels, Lewie and the Rover remind us that adventure isn’t about the vehicle – it’s about choosing a different way to experience the world.
The build
Built for long-term travel and off-grid living, their 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab is kitted out with a ModCAP Camper for cozy nights and quick setup, paired with a 270° Shadow Awning for instant shade. The rig includes a Shower Cube with dedicated mounting for convenience on the move, Load Bars for gear storage, a Spare Wheel Carrier and a Water Tank to stay stocked in the wild. Practical, purposeful and ready for wherever the road leads next!
