In the world of collecting, few things carry as much weight as a first edition. Whether it’s the first run of a classic novel, the prototype of a luxury vehicle, or the original vinyl pressing of an iconic album – owning “number one” means holding a piece of history. For overlanders and outdoor adventurers, it turns out, the same can apply to the first Khaya Camper.

Serial Number KH001
A customer recently reached out to us, wanting to know more about the serial number on his Khaya Camper. That number? KH001, the very first Khaya Camper we ever produced. In Alu-Cab’s 25th year, it feels only right to spotlight this important milestone and its current custodian.
“My name is Matteo Cairoli, I’m 21 years old and ‘Toni’ is my nickname,” he writes. “I come from Switzerland, more precisely from Ticino in the province of Mendrisio.”
Toni is a trained lumberjack and will have no problem driving the Khaya Camper, especially since he recently earned a promotion to operate heavy equipment like excavator. It’s not your typical, everyday desk job, but that’s the point.
“I chose this job because it is a job that is done outdoors and with little contact with people. And above all because it is a passion of mine.”

A New Custodian
He found KH001 by chance on a Swiss site specialising in second-hand vehicles and gear. At the time, he was simply looking for an upgrade from a rooftop tent. Something that would allow for longer trips and more comfort on the road.
“I bought it because I was looking for an alternative to a rooftop tent and above all to face longer trips.”
As is often the case with second- or third-hand vehicles, much of KH001’s backstory is unknown. All Toni could gather was that the previous owner had taken it on a four-month trip across Europe. Since buying it three weeks ago, Toni has only used it for weekends while he familiarises himself with the setup. For now, it’s fitted to his 2021 Ford Ranger Limited.

Keeping The Story Alive
“I haven’t made any changes at the moment but they will certainly happen. In fact, I will have to order some material from one of your dealers soon.”
While he may only be at the beginning of his journey with KH001, Toni is now part of something bigger: the living history of Alu-Cab. And like any prized first edition, KH001 is a reminder that the things we build can carry meaning long after they leave the factory floor.
As we celebrate 25 Years of Alu-Cab, we salute the unexpected collectors like Toni who help keep our story alive.
