The promise of a new vehicle platform is always met with a mixture of excitement and skepticism in the overlanding community. When that vehicle borrows the shape and styling of the legendary Defender, with the legacy of utilitarian design it implies, the anticipation is palpable. To separate the speculation from the substance, Jason Specht from Mountain State Overland (MSO) was joined by a few friends of Alu-Cab to put the Ineos Grenadier through a proper shakedown on the technical, rock-strewn tracks of Vermont’s backcountry.

For nearly a decade, Mountain State Overland (MSO) has been a driving force in the overlanding community. The blend of adventure travel, filmmaking and responsible exploration was founded in 2014 and began as a YouTube channel dedicated to overlanding, sustainability and off-grid living. Over the years, it has evolved into a full-fledged adventure brand, offering guided expeditions, vehicle rentals, and even Adventure X Fest (AXF), an annual gathering for the overlanding community.

Partnering with OK4WD, MSO embarked on a two-day, 100-mile journey through Vermont’s most challenging terrain. The goal? Push the Ineos Grenadier to its limits while documenting the experience for their audience. And as the photos and video embedded in this feature attest, good times were had…

This trip was about real-world overlanding, where vehicle performance, gear selection and teamwork make all the difference. And with the Alu-Cab Silenus Roof Conversion installed, the Grenadiers were equipped for both the trail and camp.

Vermont’s Toughest 4WD Tracks

MSO chose Vermont for its technical, unpredictable terrain. A true test for any overland rig. The team had previously run the Grenadiers in West Virginia’s snowy trails, but Vermont’s rocky, off-camber routes presented a new kind of challenge.

The journey covered three nights and just over 100 miles, with most of the distance spent on pavement connecting the 4WD tracks. The standout section? Chateauguay Road, a notoriously difficult trail that would push both the vehicles and the drivers to their limits.

Built for the Trail

The two Grenadiers were far from stock. To handle Vermont’s demanding terrain, they were equipped with:

  • 2″ suspension lifts
  • 33″ all-terrain tires
  • Winch bumpers and rock sliders (essential for protection)
  • Alu-Cab Silenus Roof Conversions (providing secure, elevated sleeping quarters)

The Alu-Cab conversions proved invaluable, offering quick-deploy shelter after long days on the trail. Unlike traditional rooftop tents, the Silenus system provided more interior space and weather resistance, making camp setup effortless.

Chateauguay Road

If there was one stretch that defined the trip, it was Chateauguay Road. The trail’s off-camber sections, large boulders, and narrow passages demanded precision driving and smart spotting.

At one point, the Grenadier’s weight shifted so drastically that the team had to physically lean against the truck to prevent it from sliding into rocks. With careful maneuvering and Maxtrax recovery boards, they navigated through avoiding damage.

Gear That Made the Difference

When asked about the most critical upgrades, Jason didn’t hesitate:

  • Rock sliders – “Without them, there would’ve been damage.”
  • Alu-Cab Silenus Roofs – “Spacious, reliable, and perfect for expedition travel.”

As for gear they could’ve left behind?

“We mostly cook on the fire so we didn’t need the stove.”

This Vermont trip reinforced why MSO loves testing new vehicles in extreme conditions. It’s where engineering, preparation and skill come together. The Ineos Grenadier performed impressively, and the Alu-Cab upgrades ensured comfort and durability throughout the journey.
