You may have seen two young girls in big cars pop up on your feed. We’re Aimee and Georgia, the Alu-Cab Girls, and we were fortunate to recently explore the Namaqualand. While we’re novices at pretty much everything 4X4, we really want to learn. Everyone’s got to start somewhere, and we’re excited to invite you along for the ride as we grow our 4X4 and overland competence!
Fortunately for us, we have had the luxury of borrowing some seriously kitted out Alu-Cab vehicles to take us on adventures in and around South Africa. Our first big adventure started in mid-March, when Get Out, Go! invited us to explore the Namaqua 4X4 Eco Trail up in the Northern Cape. The 11 hour trek from Cape Town to Red Sands was the longest we had ever driven solo, but the time flew by with great tunes!
When we arrived at Augrabies Falls, we had our minds blown! It literally took some foot shuffling to the edge of the path and peering over the bannister for Aimee and I to know that we were EXACTLY where we wanted to be. As fresh-out-of-uni, newbies into adulthood, we were looking for our next challenge and this is it!
Getting to explore the world, live a slower-paced life and get outdoors as much as possible resonates deeply with both of us. This Namaqualand trip was the perfect start to our journey, and great for beginners too!

The 4×4 Eco Trail itself consisted of 5-6 days of self-sufficient, wild camping. We had to carry everything we needed with us, packing all of our food, water, fuel and even a toilet into our car. We made some mistakes (a few stanky rotten potatoes and dodgy eggs later) but for the most part we had everything we needed with us. Also, having a few gurus guiding us, giving us advice and getting us unstuck from obstacles, helped. That and Thor, the Land Cruiser 76.
The trail was remote and peaceful. Camping along the Orange River most of the time, we were able to swim in the heat of the day. We loved the rocky hills and brilliant sunsets and just being outside in nature. We even met an awesome community of locals living in Goodhouse who taught us how to fish!
And finally we ended off the trip right by the ocean, at Koringkoral Bay in the Namaqua National Park. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Thank you to all of you that made it possible. We’re amped for our next trip!
Watch our YouTube video, and if you haven’t already been, we highly recommend giving Namaqualand a visit.
Thank you for your support!
