Meet Alexandra and Kyle, a paramedic and engineer from Ontario, Canada, who turned their passion for off-grid exploration into a way of life. From winter expeditions in -30°C to crossing the Grand Canyon with their infant son, their Alu-Cab Canopy Camper has been the backbone of their adventures.
This is their story, straight from the trail.

From Overlanding Volunteers to Full-Time Adventurers
Alex and Kyle first met while volunteering with OverlandNTH, bonding over a shared love of remote camping and exploration. In 2022, Kyle upgraded from a ground tent to an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper and 270° Shadow Awning on his Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison and their overlanding life transformed.
“We share a deep passion for camping, disconnecting from the grid and exploring the world around us,” says Alex, who then shares a memorable wildlife encounter. “Kyle swears he almost got eaten by a cougar. He hid in the camper and could hear it walking around camp.”

The Rig
Over time, the family has made several updates and adjustments to their rig to better suit their evolving needs.
Currently, the truck is equipped with 300 watts of solar on the roof, complemented by an additional 300 watts of portable Renogy solar panels, which power three 100Ah batteries. There’s an 80L water tank and water heater, plus a shower room, and the interior is currently undergoing renovations.
Some other upgrades that make life on the road better include a diesel heater for sub-zero camping and the 2.8L Duramax engine that gets them 1,000 km per tank. And then there’s one crucial upgrade sitting on the back of their truck…
“Alu-Cab has allowed us to expand our adventures into four seasons,” says Alex. “It keeps us warm and safe in the winter, giving us an indoor space to cook and relax. Especially now with our son.”

Why They Built Their Rig This Way
Phase 1 was all about minimalist overlanding, with a simple setup that was just enough for two people to live comfortably off-grid. Next came a series of Family-Friendly Upgrades. When their son, Everhett, arrived, they needed more storage and organization. Kyle tore out the old interior and built custom aluminum cabinets to optimize space.
“We carry a lot more gear now,” Alex explains. “The new setup keeps everything accessible without sacrificing functionality.”

What They Can’t Live Without
Alex’s Pick: The Water System
“The 80L tank and Camplux water heater makes it possible to have hot water on demand for washing dishes (especially bottles), having a shower or just rinsing down everyone’s feet before climbing into the camper.”
Kyle’s Pick: The Diesel Heater
“I’d say the diesel heater is one of the most important additions. I really enjoy winter camping. It’s peaceful and relaxing, but here in Canada, temperatures can drop as low as -30°C. Having the heater running in the Alu-Cab has been a game changer. It allows us to warm up the space, whether it’s for a late-night snack or just to get cozy. Without the heater, I honestly don’t think I could manage camping at -30°C“

Their Most Epic Trip
For Kyle’s paternity leave, the family embarked on a month-long journey through the Southwest. Taking their newborn son on a four week road trip across Utah and Arizona, the family were able to connect in a cosy and comfortable environment while sharing their love of the outdoors with Everhett.
“How many kids get to say they crossed the country before their first birthday or slept on the edge of the Grand Canyon?”
They unknowingly took the hardest trail to Point Sublime. Narrow, washed-out, and lined with massive trees. After five tense hours, they arrived, only for park rangers to say: “You brought a truck camper AND a trailer down THAT?!”
While the easier path was an option, the family wouldn’t change their choice and consider challenges as the ultimate test of their off-road skills and stories they’ll always tell. The truck’s new pinstripes?
“A badge of honor,” Kyle laughs.

How They Balance Comfort & Ruggedness
“We started minimal, but with a baby, we needed more power and storage,” Alex admits. “Now we have solar for luxuries (like a bottle warmer) and cabinets to stay organized.”
Kyle’s takes great pride in his DIY solar input port, which lets the family park in shade while panels chase the sun. As well as custom aluminum cabinetry.
“He’s too modest to say it,” says Alex. “But it’s going to be amazing when finished.”

Their Best Advice for New Overlanders
“Start small!” Alex insists. “Go camping first, figure out what you actually need and not just what Instagram says you should have.”

Dream Destinations & Future Plans
Where They’re Heading Next
This summer: East Canada (PEI & New Brunswick)
2025: Colorado, Wyoming, Montana
Bucket-List Trips
Kyle: “Alaska or the Pan-American Highway.”
Alex: “Shipping our truck to Africa for a safari expedition.”

Final Wisdom from the Trail
The family describe their garage as “a full-blown mechanic’s shop!” Kyle’s in the middle of a full suspension overhaul, adding fender flares, upgrading from 33s to 35s and swapping out the gears. The goal is for the truck to feel brand new as it approaches the 100 000 km mark.
“We’re also working on finishing the interior of the Alu-Cab cabinets and recently installed an old awning from a previous build on the opposite side of the 270 Shadow Awning, giving us coverage all around. The plan is to add screens and create a bug-free room. Perfect for the little one on our adventures.”
“You can always make more money, but not time. The memories are what matter.”

Ready to Build Your Own Adventure?
Alex and Kyle prove that with the right gear, overlanding is a lifestyle that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or a growing family, an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper gives you the freedom to explore further, in any season.
