There’s more to overlanding than just travel. Any tourist can book a trip and collect a passport stamp. Overlanding is a lifestyle built on freedom, self-reliance and adventure. And for those who embrace it, the journey is just as important as the destination. Few embody this spirit of overlanding better than Nawaf Alshuraian. The overlander from Kuwait explores the world in his rugged Mercedes G500; documenting his experiences to later share on YouTube and Instagram.
We caught up with Nawaf to discuss his overlanding journey, his vehicle setup and the lessons he’s learned along the way. Whether you’re a seasoned overlander or just getting started, his insights offer valuable wisdom. And more than just a little bit of inspiration for your next adventure.

The Explorer and His Rig
Nawaf’s love for overlanding stems from a deep desire for independence and discovery.
“What inspired me was my passion for freedom and discovery. I wanted to be fully independent, move without limits, and live in the moment. Anywhere, anytime.”
His vehicle, a 2009 Mercedes G500, is a powerhouse built for endurance. With an 8-cylinder petrol engine, full-time 4WD and triple differential locks, it’s can conquer any terrain. In style. But what truly sets it apart is the carefully selected gear that makes life on the road comfortable and efficient. This includes a place to sleep, protection from the weather, independent power and a mobile kitchen. All essential for long-term travel.
“I built the vehicle to serve me in all conditions and carry everything I need with me.”

The Gear That Makes the Difference
For Nawaf, his rooftop tent and Shower Cube have been game-changers.
“Alu-Cab completely changed my overlanding experience. The Gen 3-R rooftop tent makes sleeping anywhere quick and easy and the Shower Cube gives me privacy even in the open.”
When asked about his favourite feature of his vehicle, he highlights the G-Class itself, referring to it not as a machine but a living thing.
“It’s become my travel partner. The strength, stability, and simplicity of use make it my most trusted companion on any terrain.”
Something that this journey has taught Nawaf is that he can fix almost anything himself. He adapts quickly. Even when it’s something totally new. And while he’s bought the best accessories for his rig, he’s not afraid to roll up his sleeves and build things himself.
“I’ve done a lot of customisations myself. I’m proud of how I organised the storage system and built a full power setup with external battery, solar input, and 12V/USB ports. It’s all tailored to my use and works perfectly on the road.”
And if he had to choose one piece of gear he couldn’t live without?
“The Alu-Cab Gen 3-R rooftop tent is the one thing I can’t live without. It gives me a safe, fast, and comfortable sleeping space wherever I am.”

Trials, Triumphs, and Lessons Learned
Overlanding isn’t without its challenges. Nawaf has faced stuck vehicles, blown tires and remote recoveries. Each experience a lesson that reinforces the importance of preparation.
“One of the hardest moments was when I got completely stuck in soft sand while traveling solo. I had no help, so I calmly aired down the tires, used my recovery gear and managed to get out safely.”
Another lesson? Always carry a spare tyre.
“A major challenge was when one of my tyres blew out and I didn’t have a spare. Even worse, the same size tyre wasn’t available locally. After a long search, I finally found one in a remote area. That experience taught me the importance of being fully prepared.”
Planning trips properly almost goes without saying…
“I use Garmin devices for remote terrain and Google Maps for cities and highways. I also check road conditions, weather, fuel stations and sometimes get tips from locals or other overlanders. The goal is always to be safe while taking on adventurous travel.”
Despite the challenges, the rewards are worth it. His most epic trip so far? Dakar!
“It pushed my limits with tough terrain, long distances and intense conditions. Every day was a real test for both me and the rig.”

Balancing Comfort and Durability
A well-built overlanding rig strikes a balance between comfort and ruggedness. Nawaf’s approach is simple: choose the right gear.
“Since day one, my goal was to strike a balance between comfort and reliability. Every item I choose is lightweight, tough and functional.”
His advice for beginners? Start simple.
“Start simple and be realistic. Don’t buy everything at once. Go on short trips and let the experience guide your setup. For me, one of the best decisions I made early on was choosing Alu-Cab gear, especially the Gen 3 rooftop tent. It gave me peace of mind and comfort from day one.”

The Future of Adventure
Nawaf’s dream destination?
“My dream trip is to travel the African continent from north to south. I’d like to start in Egypt or Morocco and head all the way to Cape Town.”
As for what’s next? He keeps it mysterious.
“I prefer to keep it a surprise. I’m always preparing and planning something, but I don’t share it until I’m on the road. All I can say is: what’s coming is different. The ambition never stops.”

Final Thoughts
Nawaf’s story is true to the spirit of overlanding. His life is one of extremes where he takes pleasure in the simplicity of a camp breakfast “a classic Kuwaiti-style breakfast with fried eggs on the pan, fresh bread and tea brewed on the fire” as well as the type of technical trials where challenges become stories worth telling.
Whether you’re a weekend camper or a full-time explorer, Nawaf’s experiences remind us that the best adventures begin with a single step (or in this case, the turn of the ignition key).
